Meet The Herd

Dezi
Arabian | 31 Years Old
Dezi is a 31-year-old Arabian gelding standing 15.2 hands, known for his intelligence, athleticism, and gentle, sensitive nature. With a hint of mischief and a deeply intuitive spirit, he has a special way of caring for those who need him most—whether patiently carrying young riders or softly accepting a treat. As founder Sherrie’s lifelong heart-horse, Dezi has shared a rich history of adventures, from hunter-jumper and dressage to rugged trail rides. Having spent his early years on the very land BFER now calls home, Dezi has come full circle, returning to live out his days among fellow retirees. His character and legacy continue to shape BFER’s mission as a compassionate and welcoming sanctuary.
Sofia
Thoroughbred |17 Years Old
Sofia, a 16.1-hand dark bay off-the-track Thoroughbred mare, was the first horse donated to BFER. Intelligent, strong-willed, and full of personality, she was rescued by her former owner, Kelly, after being abandoned and found severely underweight at a public stable. Over the years, Kelly restored Sofia’s health and discovered her sweet yet feisty nature. However, likely due to her racing past, Sofia developed chronic back pain that made stalling and riding difficult despite extensive treatments. Wanting a more comfortable, pain-free life for her, Kelly, in consultation with a veterinarian, chose to send Sofia to BFER, where she can move freely and live more comfortably.

Big Don
Standardbred |17 Years Old
Big Don is a 17-year-old bay Standardbred gelding with a striking coppery coat and a star on his forehead. Bred by an Amish family, he spent his early years pulling a buggy, developing the steady, dependable nature he’s known for today. Friendly and gentle, Big Don has a special talent for connecting with people, especially those with autism, making him a calm and trusted partner both on the ground and in his work.
Never
Thoroughbred |8 Years Old
This 8-year-old bay Thoroughbred gelding is the tallest horse in the barn, and carries himself with natural elegance and a quiet, gentlemanly charm that’s hard to miss.
Bred and trained for Eventing, Never developed a steady, level-headed temperament to match his athletic ability. After being diagnosed with Wobblers, a neurological condition, Never found his new home at BFER where he's known for his sweet nature and calm demeanor—a true gentleman who brings a sense of peace and dignity to everyone lucky enough to spend time with him.

Junior Princess (JP)
Quarter Pony |19 Years Old
JP—also known as Junior Princess or “Little Bit”—came to us with her friend, Dakota.
She’s got attitude in spades and the natural athleticism to back it up. But underneath that bold exterior, JP has a sweet side she shares on her own terms—often accompanied by her signature slobbery affection.
Whether she’s showing off her spunky spirit or leaning in for a messy hello, JP keeps life interesting and makes sure there’s never a dull moment around her.
Dakota
Appaloosa Pony | 25 Years Old
Dakota, often found sporting his “Darth Vader” mask, has pink skin that can be sensitive to the sun and flies. Lovingly nicknamed “Puppy Pony,” he adores licking hands like a dog and is known for his gentle, affectionate nature.
After being donated to another nonprofit, Dakota and JP needed a new home when it closed its doors. We’re so happy they found their way to BFER, where they can live out their days surrounded by care and love.

Zipper
Arabian | 30+ Years Old
Zipper is a gray Arabian gelding—now 98% white—who proves age is just a number. At over 30 years old, he’s still full of energy and curiosity, with plenty of vim and vigor.
Zipper’s previous owner had to sell the farm he called home, which led him to find a new place at BFER. Despite his gentle, sweet nature, Zipper’s past as a cattle horse still shows—he once perked up instantly at the sight of cows at the vet, watching them with sharp focus.
Kind, steady, and full of life, Zipper is a wonderful reminder that even in their later years, horses still have so much to give.
Wave
Dutch Warmblood | 24 Years Old
Wave is a 24-year-old gray Dutch Warmblood gelding with an impressive past and a big personality. Imported to the U.S., he enjoyed a successful career as an Open Jumper on the Grand Prix circuit before an injury brought his competition days to a close.
After being boarded in St. Louis, his owner—a Missouri State student—knew he deserved something more sustainable and chose BFER as his next chapter. Since arriving in March 2026, Wave has quickly made himself known, carving out a prominent place in the herd.
With a personality that’s equal parts well-mannered and a little bit arrogant, Wave brings charm, confidence, and a touch of show-ring flair wherever he goes.

Powder
Arabian Pony | 20+ Years Old
Powder is a gray (nearly white) Arabian pony and the smallest horse on the farm—but he makes a big impression. Though he’s over 20 (his exact age is unknown), he has a sweet, gentle personality and a willing attitude that win over everyone he meets.
Rescued and later placed for adoption, Powder came to BFER in March 2026 when he needed a fitting home for his later years. Despite having been a stallion until recently and never being ridden, he has settled in beautifully.
A fast favorite—especially with little kids—Powder proves that kindness and charm come in small packages.
